Great new little SUV

Seems great but still is new to me.

The seats are a little too low… So you cannot see out the front windshield as well as I'd like when driving in off road conditions.

The Jimny doesn't pretend to be a Landcruiser, but considering a Cruiser will cost you between $54k and $97k against the cost of a base Jimny $11k to $16k … you could buy 5 or 6 Jimny's for the price of one Landcruiser. I wanted to have 4WD off road access into our retirement years. As I looked at 4WD's that could access the roads and beaches I wanted to access I had to ask myself the big question, "What can I afford?" It came down to this. I looked at thte vehicles available and asked myself "Can I afford to replace the tyres?". We don't have a lot of money, but the Jimny fitted the bill. We bought our 2015 Jimny second hand for $20k. Low kms, tow bar, lift kit, side bars, fog lights, upgraded sound system, new tyres. We added window tinting and electronic rust proofing for and extra $2k. Granted it's 'cosy', but we're not big people and getting in and out is a matter of 'sliding' (no fork lift or ladder required). It goes from 0 to100kph … eventually and is happy to cruise at that speed on the freeways. A slight learning curve in using the auto gearbox on a hill, gets you to the top in good time. Overtaking can be done if approached sensibly. On occasions when we tow our 7 x 4 trailer, we will courtiously allow people the opportunity to pass as required because it does slow us down. Even when towing, we cruise at around 90kph. I'm good at packing and it's amazing what we can fit in the Jimny with the 2 back seats folded down. Haven't been beaten yet and I tend to carry a lot of tools to fix things at our daughters house 5 hours from home. The seats are comfortable on a long drive. Being oldish we do tend to naturally stop every 2 – 3 hours for a cupa or little mens room. The back seats on a long drive are quiet good for someone 2 – 9 years old. The vision from the back seats is surprisingly good at their level. We have been well 'packed' with our 7 year old grandson on a trip and that was ok. Two on a long trip would require a roof rack. The leg room in front is fantastic. I have a tall friend who was quiet comfortable. Our family members have various large 4WD's that have the same engine and travelling noise as our Jimny and thier seats are not as comfortable as ours. Vision out the front is sufficiently good when choosing a path off road. Low range does a good job. (Tip – in low range on a hair pin bend – do 3 point turns to take the pressure off your gearbox). The standard lights are quiet good but I upgraded to LED and hope for a lightbar in the future. OH! some great advantages. you can fit diff-lockers … big tyres … bull bar (for $1400) … put a lower gear in your transfer box … add a 'forced air induction system' to your motor … etc, etc, all for lower prices than your big machines. I would like some diff-locks but don't feel attracted to some of these other things. I'm not that brave or flushed with money. Every time I get in behind the wheel … I like it! I maintain my own vehicle and have had no problems over the 2-3 years we've owned it ……………… except one …………………. that's in the fo NOT like section ………… but before that makes you dismiss the Jimny, show me any other vehicle that hasn't had at least on "I DON"T LIKE" experience …………. Happy driving

The one thing right from the start has been steering wobble. The dealer I bought it from knew less than me and couldn't find the cause. I fitted a steering dampener which reduced the effect (always around 80kph) but didn't get rid of it totally. The front wheel bearing checked out ok as did the shocks and shims etc. 'Research' has taught me that the problem stems from bad engineering design and a solid axle that transfers vibrations. This is a common problem with the Jimny's. I wonder if the new Jimny has overcome this problem. Older, larger solid axles can have the same trouble except it's not a problem with them because of the large diameter wheels and tyres. The wobble comes in at 120kph. A mechanic in the UK lays out a plan on how to overcome it by adjusting the shims on the steering knuckle which may work. Haven't tried it … I'm going to replace the tyres with standard size and see what happens. The problem is "there", but not all the time and the wobble is not really that bad … but I hate things not being right, so I'll persevere. It hasn't put me off our little Jimny … just challaged me … and I like a challenge.
